OpenLate — Restaurants by Operating Hours
User Guide
User Guide — OpenLate
When to Use This
You're traveling, it's late, and you need food fast. OpenLate shows what's open in your current city — grouped by how long they're still serving — so you don't have to open every listing in a map app.
Getting Started
- Open the app on your phone (see README for how to start the server or deploy).
- Allow location access when your browser asks — this is how the app knows your city.
- Wait a few seconds while restaurants load near you.
- Browse the groups:
- Open Late — still serving after 11 PM
- Open 24 Hours — always open
- Open Now — open with plenty of time left
- Closing Soon — less than 30 minutes left
- Opens Soon — opening within the hour
Searching Another City
If you're planning ahead or location is denied:
- Type a city name in the search box (e.g. "Billings, MT").
- Tap Go.
Filters
Check any combination:
- Fast Food — quick-service spots
- Sit-Down — restaurants and cafes
- Drive-Thru — has drive-through
- Accessible — wheelchair accessible per OSM
Sorting
- Remaining Open Time (default) — longest open first within each group
- Distance — closest first
- Closing Time — same as remaining open time
Directions
Tap Directions on any card to open Google Maps navigation.
Tips
- Add OpenLate to your home screen for one-tap access while traveling.
- Status refreshes every minute automatically.
- Tap Use My Location to re-detect your city after you move.
- If a place shows wrong hours, the OSM community data may be outdated — call ahead for important trips.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| "Location permission needed" | Allow location in browser settings, or search a city manually |
| No restaurants found | Try a larger city; OSM may lack hours data in rural areas |
| Wrong city shown | Tap Use My Location again; ensure GPS is enabled |
| App won't load on phone | Use the LAN URL from the terminal, same Wi‑Fi as your computer |
